About how many expatriates live in Costa Rica?

I read that Costa Rica has the largest community of Americans living outside America. Is this true? About how many Americans live there? About how many are retirees? And how many end up returning to the U.S. due that did not work for them?

A recent estimate is 40,000 northamericans publication. There are estimates that about 20% of the population is foreign origin, but most are from other Central American countries. Since many foreigners are getting stupidly complicated legal residence (actually obtain residency is not too difficult until you hire a lawyer to help you, then things really get F * cked Up) here the account is considered very remote of many people live here full time but leave the country every three months for three days, are called perpetual tourists. It is legal at this time. I would say a vast majority of people who come here with the intention to leave the room, probably at least 2 out of 3. For some reason northamericans many (especially the U.S.) was shocked to discover that when living in a foreign country is not U.S.. The gringos are bad at geography.
